Moving is a big project, and part of what can make it seem overwhelming is the cost. No one wants to start the process without understanding how much you'll have to pay, but there is no one-price-fits-all when it comes to moving. There are a variety of factors that affect the final cost of your move, some of which are in your control and others which are not.

Distance

Moving across town costs less than moving across the state or country. Long moves require more fuel, more time, and more logistics. An international move increases the cost even more.

Of course, there's not a lot of wiggle room here. You can't choose to move closer just to cut down on your moving costs, so there's not a lot you can do in this category to lower your moving costs.

Packing

If packing up a large home seems like a daunting task, you can hire your movers to do the packing for you; of course, that will increase the final cost of your move. You can save some money by doing all the packing yourself and having the boxes ready to go when the movers show up at your house. Make it more manageable by starting a week or two in advance with the items you don't need immediately: decor, extra bedding, certain kitchen appliances, and seasonal clothing.

Size of the Home

The contents of a one-bedroom apartment are easier (and less expensive) to move than those of a five-bedroom house. Moving is a great opportunity to assess your belongings and sell or donate anything you don't need or want before you start packing.

Stairs

Hauling boxes and furniture down flights of stairs, either the one flight in your two-story home or a few flights in an apartment building, is much more challenging than simply walking it all out the front door from one level. With the added complexity of the movers comes extra cost.

Disassembly/Assembly

If large items like dressers, beds, or exercise equipment need to be dismantled and reassembled upon arrival in your new home, this takes extra time and work for the movers. Again, you could choose to do this yourself to save some money.

Specialty Items

Grand pianos, other musical instruments, fine art, and antiques, such as tapestries, paintings, sculptures, lithographs, and more, require special packing and care. We understand the unique financial and sentimental value of these irreplaceable items, and we take our responsibility for them very seriously.

Items of this nature will increase the cost of the move, but like the distance between your current house and your new house, there's not much to be done about this. Those special items absolutely have to go with you, and it's worth the cost to make sure they arrive safely.

Time

Local moves are charged by the hour, so the more time it takes to make the move, the more it will cost. As professional movers, we can usually estimate this time frame with decent accuracy, but unforeseen challenges could make the day go long. We always work as quickly and efficiently as possible for you.

Keeping Your Moving Costs Down

Professional movers like Solomon & Sons Relocation Services offer a variety of moving-related services, like packing, specialty-item packing, storage, and more, to make the move as convenient as possible for you. However, you can choose which options to take advantage of.

Customize your moving experience to fit your needs. For example, you can lower your costs by selecting the Kitchen Pack, for example, instead of the Full Pack, where we pack up the numerous and delicate kitchen items and you take care of the rest of the house. The more disassembly, packing, and other preparation you do, the less time the movers will need to spend on your move.

When determining how to best cut your moving costs, keep in mind the cost of doing certain things yourself. Moving heavy furniture could result in soreness or even injury; packing everything yourself takes time you might prefer to spend at work or with friends before you move.

The best way to get an idea of what it will cost for your move is to get an estimate. We offer estimates onsite and by phone; contact us so we can arrange a chat or a visit to give you a better idea of what your unique move is going to cost.
